Marriott Bonvoy Guide: Points, Cards & Elite Status

Marriott Bonvoy India is the largest hotel loyalty programme in India & the world, with over 9,600 properties across 143 countries. For Indians it is more than a stays programme: it links credit cards, ITC Hotels, The Fern Hotels, airline miles, and elite shortcuts into one ecosystem. This guide covers what you need to know to use it well.

TL;DR

If you enjoy staying at Marriott, ITC Grand Collection, or The Fern Hotels, Marriott Bonvoy is one of the most rewarding hotel loyalty programmes you can join. The best value comes from redeeming points for hotel stays, especially with the 5th Night Free benefit, and working towards Platinum Elite status for perks like complimentary breakfast, lounge access, suite upgrades, and guaranteed late checkout. You can earn points through hotel stays, the HDFC Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card, or partner transfers such as Amex Membership Rewards. Always book directly with Marriott, and save your points for hotel stays instead of flights or dining to get the best value.

Read the complete guide to learn how to earn Marriott Bonvoy points faster, maximise their value, and reach Platinum Elite with fewer stays.

1. How Marriott Bonvoy Points Work

1.1 Points and Elite Nights

Bonvoy uses a single points currency for earning and redemption. Separately, qualifying nights determine your elite tier. Credit card transfers add to your points balance but do not count as elite nights.

1.2 What Is a Bonvoy Point Worth?

Marriott uses a dynamic points redemption rate, meaning point costs fluctuate with cash rates. As a benchmark, a well-chosen India redemption delivers ₹ 0.55 to ₹ 0.75 per point. International properties in Dubai, Bangkok, or Singapore can stretch to ₹ 0.85 to ₹ 1.00 per point during peak periods.

The 5th Night Free rule is the most reliable way to improve value: book five consecutive nights with points at the same property and the fifth night is complimentary. A 50,000-point stay effectively costs 40,000 points, improving your per-point return by 25%.

1.3 Point Expiry

Points expire after 24 consecutive months of account inactivity. Any qualifying activity, including earning points from card spends, making a redemption, or transferring to an airline resets the clock.

2. Marriott Bonvoy India Brands

Marriott is India’s largest hotel company with 140+ properties. 15 of its 30+ brands are present here. Key brands by tier:

TierBrands in IndiaTypical Rate
LuxurySt. Regis, Ritz-Carlton, W Hotels, The Luxury Collection (incl. ITC Grand Collection), JW Marriott, Edition₹ 20,000 to ₹ 1,00,000+
PremiumMarriott Hotels & Resorts, Sheraton, Westin,
Le Meridien, Marriott Executive Apartments
₹ 8,000 to ₹ 25,000
SelectCourtyard by Marriott, Four Points by Sheraton, Fairfield by Marriott, Aloft, The Fern Hotels & Resorts*₹ 3,500 to ₹ 10,000

* The Fern Hotels & Resorts is a partner brand. Fern properties earn and redeem Bonvoy points like standard Marriott brands. Fern has a strong footprint in tier-2 and tier-3 Indian cities and at eco-resorts. That makes it a useful pick for leisure or business trips where Marriott’s own brands are absent.

4. Reaching Platinum Without 50 Nights

The smart approach is to stack shortcuts:

  • HDFC Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card: Gives Silver Elite status on activation and 10 Elite Night Credits (ENCs) every year. The carde has an annual fee of ₹ 3,000 + GST = ₹ 3,540
  • Amex Platinum Charge Card: Gives complimentary Gold Elite status (no night credit, but full Gold benefits including room upgrades and 2 PM checkout).
  • Double Elite Nights promotions: Marriott periodically runs these. Stack 10 ENCs from the HDFC card + 20 real nights on a double-night promo = 50 nights and Platinum.
  • ITC Grand Collection stays: Paid stays at ITC’s flagship properties (Maurya, Grand Chola, Sonar, etc.) listed under The Luxury Collection count as Marriott qualifying nights. Attach your Bonvoy number at booking. ITC stays paid with Club ITC Green Points do not count.
  • The Fern Hotels stays: Stays at Fern properties also count toward qualifying nights when booked under your Bonvoy number.

5. Earning Marriott Bonvoy Points in India

5.1 On Stays

Most Marriott brands earn 10 Bonvoy points per USD 1 on eligible room charges. Elite members earn bonus points on top: Gold +25%, Platinum +50%, Titanium/Ambassador +75%.
Book directly through the Marriott app or Marriott website.
OTA bookings (MakeMyTrip, Goibibo) earn nothing and do not count as elite nights.

5.2 HDFC Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card

Spend CategoryPoints per ₹ 150Monthly Cap
Eligible Marriott properties8 pointsUp to ₹ 10 lakh/month spend
Travel, dining, entertainment4 pointsUp to ₹ 5 lakh/month spend
All other eligible spends2 pointsUp to ₹ 1.5 lakh/month spend

The card also gives a Free Night Award (up to 15,000 points) as a welcome and renewal benefit, plus additional FNAs at annual spend milestones of ₹ 6 lakh, ₹ 9 lakh, and ₹ 15 lakh. Exclusions: fuel, wallet loads, rent, government payments, EMI conversions.

5.3 Transferring Partner Points

HSBC Premier Reward Points1:1Up to 1 weekFor maximum value, points are typically better transferred to Accor. Consider Marriott Bonvoy primarily for topping up your balance before a redemption

AMEX cards and the HDFC Marriott card are now the primary credit card routes to Bonvoy points in India, with HSBC Premier and TravelOne as a good top-up option if you are short on points for an upcoming booking.

6. How to Redeem Marriott Bonvoy Points

6.1 For Hotel Stays

Book directly through the Marriott app or website. Select points-only or Points + Cash. You still earn elite nights on points stays. Aim for ₹ 0.60 or more per point, divide the cash rate by the point cost before confirming any redemption.

PropertyCash Rate (approx.)Points Range / Night
JW Marriott Mussoorie Walnut Grove₹ 20,000 to ₹ 50,00030,000 to 70,000 pts
Westin Mumbai Garden City₹ 10,000 to ₹ 25,00020,000 to 45,000 pts
Courtyard by Marriott (metro cities)₹ 6,000 to ₹ 12,00015,000 to 25,000 pts
Fairfield by Marriott Goa / Fern eco-property₹ 4,000 to ₹ 10,00010,000 to 18,000 pts

Note: Point costs are dynamic and vary by date and demand. These are indicative ranges only.

6.2 Free Night Award Certificates

Certificates from the HDFC Marriott card are capped at 15,000-point properties. This covers mid-tier properties like Fairfield Goa or Courtyard in smaller cities. You can top up a certificate with extra points to access higher-tier properties, which significantly improves flexibility.

6.3 What to Avoid

  • Airline transfers: 3 Bonvoy points = 1 airline mile. At that ratio you are valuing your points at under Re. 0.30 each.
  • Dining and spa redemptions at the hotel: value drops to ₹ 0.30 to ₹ 0.40 per point.
  • Buying points at ₹ 1.05 per point speculatively, only buy to top off a confirmed redemption.

7. Annual Choice Benefit at Platinum and Titanium

After completing your qualifying nights, log in and make your selection. It is not automatic.

TierBest OptionOther Options
Platinum5 Nightly Upgrade Awards (NUAs) apply at check-in for suite or room upgrades, highest value at luxury properties5 Elite Night Credits, mattress discount, gift Silver to someone, charity donation
TitaniumFree Night Award (up to 40,000 pts) covers JW Marriott Mussoorie, strong international propertiesGift Gold Elite to someone, 5 NUAs, 5 Elite Night Credits

NUAs are checked for availability from 5 days before arrival through the day before arrival at most properties except for EDITION, the Ritz-Carlton, and St. Regis, where NUAs are checked for availability 3 days before arrival through the day before arrival.

Use these NUAs at premium properties in Maldives, Dubai, or Bali where suite upgrades carry the highest cash value.

8. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Booking via OTAs. MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, and Yatra earn zero points and zero elite nights. Always book direct.
  • Ignoring ITC and Fern stays. If you already stay at ITC Grand Collection or Fern properties, attaching your Bonvoy number costs nothing and earns you both points and elite night credit.
  • Treating all benefits as guaranteed. Suite upgrades and late checkout at Gold are subject to availability. Only Platinum’s 4 PM checkout and Titanium’s 48-hr room guarantee are firm.
  • Transferring Club ITC points without a plan. The annual cap is now 20,000 Green Points (30,000 Bonvoy points), which is barely enough for a single metro redemption. Transfer with a specific stay in mind.
  • Redeeming for F&B or spa at below ₹ 0.50 per point when a room redemption would deliver ₹ 0.70 or more.

9. Frequently Asked Questions

Do ITC hotel stays always count as Marriott elite nights?

Only paid stays at ITC Grand Collection properties listed under The Luxury Collection count. You must have your Bonvoy number on the booking and pay with cash. Stays paid with Club ITC Green Points do not qualify.

Do ITC hotel stays always count as Marriott elite nights?

Only paid stays at ITC Grand Collection properties listed under The Luxury Collection count. You must have your Bonvoy number on the booking and pay with cash. Stays paid with Club ITC Green Points do not qualify.

Do The Fern Hotels stays earn Bonvoy points and elite nights?

Yes. The Fern Hotels & Resorts participates in Marriott Bonvoy. Book with your Bonvoy number through Marriott’s platform or the property directly. Stays earn points and count as qualifying nights just like other Marriott brands.

Can I transfer Bonvoy points to another member?

Yes, it can be done using the Friends & Family points pooling. It is more cost-effective to pool points with a family member who is close to a redemption threshold rather than buying top-up points from Marriott. Transfers can be done by visiting the Points transfer tool page.

Is the HDFC Marriott Bonvoy card worth it if I rarely stay at Marriott?

The card pays for itself if you use the annual Free Night Award at a property worth ₹ 6,000 to
₹ 10,000 per night, which covers the ₹ 3,000 annual fee. Without planned Marriott stays, the earn rate on general spending is modest and the card has limited appeal.

What happens if a Marriott property has no executive lounge?

At properties without a lounge, Platinum and Titanium members receive an alternative: typically restaurant breakfast at Courtyard hotels, or an F&B credit or points at other brands. Confirm with the property before arrival since the app does not always clarify this clearly.

10. Final Word

Marriott Bonvoy is fundamentally a hotel-stays programme. The credit card and partner transfers accelerate your balance, but the real benefits only unlock at Platinum. Suite upgrades, lounge access, guaranteed 4 PM checkout, and free nights all require genuine stays to get there.

The inclusion of ITC Grand Collection and The Fern Hotels in the programme gives Indian members more options to earn elite nights domestically than most guides acknowledge.

Book direct, attach your Bonvoy number to ITC and Fern stays, stack the HDFC card with Amex Reward Points, and target Platinum as your status goal. Done right, Bonvoy can deliver suite upgrades and complimentary breakfast at properties where a room alone costs ₹ 20,000 a night.
