HDFC SmartBuy: How It Works, Rewards & Best Ways to Use It

SmartBuy is HDFC Bank’s shopping and travel portal, and it’s the fastest way to squeeze extra value out of an HDFC credit or debit card. Book flights, hotels, brand vouchers, or even duty free through it, and you earn a multiplier on top of your card’s normal rewards rate. But the earning rates, redemption values, and monthly caps are different for every card tier and every category, so it’s easy to leave money on the table without realising it. Here’s the full picture.

TL;DR

  • SmartBuy multiplies your card’s base reward rate, it doesn’t replace it. The multiplier (3X, 5X, 10X) only means something once you know your card’s base rate.
  • Redemption value differs sharply by card: Infinia and the Diners Black family redeem at 1 RP = ₹1 on flights/hotels, Regalia/Privilege/BizPower at 1 RP = ₹0.50.
  • Every card has a monthly and daily cap, and brand vouchers share that same cap rather than getting their own bucket. Booking order changes your total earnings.
  • Best value tends to go to Infinia and Diners Black cardholders on hotel and flight bookings, where redemption compounds with the higher multiplier.

1. What SmartBuy actually does

SmartBuy is not a separate rewards programme. It’s a portal that accelerates the reward points or cashback you already earn on your HDFC card, as long as you transact through it. HDFC Bank facilitates the payment gateway and communicates merchant offers, but the merchants (IGP, MakeMyTrip, ConfirmTkt, RedBus, Apple, and others) fulfil the actual product or booking.

You can access the accelerated rate through a credit card, a debit card on SmartBuy’s website or app, or PayZapp, HDFC’s wallet. The rate you get depends on which of these you use and which card is linked.

2. Earning rates by category and card

This is the core table. Reward points (RP) apply to credit cards, cashback applies to other credit cards and debit cards, and PayZapp cashpoints apply to PayZapp wallet and linked debit card transactions on select categories.

*Duty Free – Adani One: 10X/10% is a limited-time offer valid 4 to 31 August 2026, for travel up to 30 September 2026, on full-swipe payments only. From 1 September 2026 onward, this category reverts to 5X reward points or 5% cashback.

“Other CC” refers to HDFC Bank’s mass-market and co-branded credit cards, including cards such as Millennia, MoneyBack, MoneyBack+, Freedom, Swiggy BLCK, Swiggy Ornge, Tata Neu Infinity & Tata Neu Plus credit cards. These cards earn flat SmartBuy cashback rather than accelerated reward points. Therefore, a 10% or 5% rate shown for a category is the actual cashback rate, not a multiplier on the card’s base rewards.

3. Brand Vouchers for Everyday Spending

SmartBuy isn’t just for travel. You can also buy vouchers from a wide range of brands you already use for shopping, food, entertainment and other everyday expenses.

Instead of paying the merchant directly, buying an eligible voucher through SmartBuy can earn you accelerated rewards on spending you were going to make anyway.

This makes SmartBuy useful even if you don’t travel frequently. Just remember that brand voucher rewards count towards your overall monthly SmartBuy cap.

4. What your points are worth when you redeem

Redemption value only applies to flight and hotel bookings on SmartBuy, and it varies sharply by card tier. This is where the premium cards pull ahead of entry-level ones, since redemption rate compounds with the earn rate.

CardRedemption rateMax redemption on flights/hotels
Infinia1 RP = ₹1Up to 70% of booking value
Diners Black / Diners Black Metal / Biz Black Metal1 RP = ₹1Up to 70% of booking value
Regalia, Diners Privilege, BizPower1 RP = ₹0.50Up to 70% of booking value
Other credit cards1 RP = up to ₹0.35Up to 50% of booking value

Points can’t be redeemed against IGP.com, trains, buses, brand vouchers, Apple Imagine Tresor, Myntra, Jockey, MMT holiday packages, Pharmeasy, or Duty Free bookings. Those categories are earn-only through SmartBuy.

5. Monthly and daily caps

Every card has a ceiling on how much accelerated benefit it can earn per calendar month, and a separate daily ceiling. Brand vouchers (Gyftr/Woohoo) have their own sub-cap that sits inside the overall monthly cap, not on top of it.

CardOverall monthly capBrand vouchers sub-cap (within overall)
Infinia15,000 RP3,000 RP
Diners Club Black Metal & Biz Black Metal10,000 RP3,000 RP
Diners Club Black7,500 RP3,000 RP
Regalia Gold, Regalia, Diners Club Privilege, BizPower4,000 RP3,000 RP
Tata Neu Infinity & Tata Neu Plus1,000 coins1,000 coins
Other credit cards (Millennia, MoneyBack, MoneyBack+, Freedom, Swiggy BLCK and Swiggy Ornge)₹1,000 cashback₹1,000 cashback
Debit cards₹1,000 cashback₹1,000 cashback
PayZapp Wallet₹1,000 cashpoints₹1,000 cashpoints

How the sub-cap works in practice: say you’re an Infinia cardholder with a ₹30,000 brand voucher purchase and a ₹50,000 hotel booking in the same month. If you do the voucher purchase first, it uses up the full 3,000 RP voucher sub-cap, and the hotel booking then earns 12,000 RP toward the remaining 15,000 RP overall cap. If you book the hotel first, it earns almost the entire cap on its own, leaving very little room for the voucher purchase afterward. Order of transactions changes your total.

6. How payment method changes what you earn

Four payment routes qualify for SmartBuy benefits, and they don’t all earn the same thing:

  • Credit card (including EMI): earns reward points at the rates in the table above, based on card tier.
  • Debit card via SmartBuy web/mLite/PWA: earns cashback points, credited within 90 working days, redeemable through Net Banking.
  • Debit card via PayZapp shop: earns PayZapp cashpoints on select categories like hotels, IRCTC, and IGP, credited within 90 working days.
  • PayZapp wallet: earns PayZapp cashpoints instantly or within 5 working days, mainly on flights, RedBus, and brand vouchers.

A PayZapp-linked card gets the same benefit tier as a full-swipe transaction with that same card, so the underlying card still decides your rate even when you pay through PayZapp.

7. When the benefit actually shows up

Credit card reward points and cashback are credited within 90 working days from the last date of the transaction month, provided the card account is still active. Debit card cashback follows the same 90 working day window. PayZapp cashpoints are the fastest, landing instantly or within 5 working days once a promo code is applied.

8. Exclusions worth knowing before you book

A few conditions catch people out:

  • Myntra’s 5X/5% benefit doesn’t apply to the entire order if it includes any gold or silver product, even if the rest of the cart qualifies.
  • The IRCTC Cobrand card’s 5% cashback on train bookings only applies to transactions made through SmartBuy, not directly on IRCTC.
  • SmartBuy cashback and merchant-level cashback (like a card’s standard 1% cashback) can’t be clubbed together on the same transaction.
  • SmartBuy benefits don’t apply in case of loan pre-closure.
  • No two SmartBuy programmes or offers can be combined on the same transaction.

9. Effective rewards: base rate x multiplier, card by card

The multiplier tables above only tell half the story. “10X” means nothing on its own, it multiplies your card’s base earning rate, and that base rate is not the same across cards, and it recently stopped being the same even within the “Regalia, Diners Privilege, BizPower” group. Here’s what each card actually earns once the multiplier is applied.

A base-rate change to flag:

  1. effective 15 May 2026, HDFC revised the base earning rate on Regalia Gold, BizPower, and Diners Club Privilege. All three used to earn identically (4 RP per ₹150).
  2. They no longer do. Regalia Gold and BizPower moved to 5 RP per ₹200, while Diners Club Privilege moved to 4 RP per ₹200, a lower rate than the other two.
  3. So while these three cards still share the same SmartBuy multipliers and the same redemption value (1 RP = ₹0.50 on flights and hotels), Diners Club Privilege now earns about 20% less than Regalia Gold or BizPower on identical spends.

Reward points earned by multiplier tier:

CardSpend unitBase RP3X (Trains)5X / 10X (Flights, Hotels, IGP etc.)
Infinia₹1505 RP15 RP (3X)25 RP (5X) / 50 RP (10X)
Diners Club Black₹1505 RP15 RP (3X)25 RP (5X) / 50 RP (10X)
Diners Club Black Metal₹1505 RP15 RP (3X)25 RP (5X) / 50 RP (10X)
Biz Black Metal₹1505 RP15 RP (3X)25 RP (5X) / 50 RP (10X)
Regalia Gold₹2005 RP15 RP (3X)25 RP (5X) / 50 RP (10X)
BizPower₹2005 RP15 RP (3X)25 RP (5X) / 50 RP (10X)
Diners Club Privilege₹2004 RP12 RP (3X)20 RP (5X) / 40 RP (10X)

Infinia, Diners Club Black, Diners Club Black Metal, and Biz Black Metal all earn on a ₹150 spend unit. Regalia Gold, BizPower, and Diners Club Privilege earn on a ₹200 spend unit, so their RP counts aren’t directly comparable to the ₹150 cards without converting. The category grouping is: 3X applies to trains, 5X applies to flights, buses, brand vouchers, Apple Imagine Tresor, Myntra, and MMT holiday packages, 10X applies to IGP.com, hotels, Jockey, Pharmeasy, and Duty Free (August 2026 window only).

What that’s actually worth in rupees:

This is where it matters. RP value depends on the card, since Infinia and the Diners Black family redeem at 1 RP = ₹1 on flights and hotels, while Regalia Gold, BizPower, and Diners Club Privilege redeem at 1 RP = ₹0.50. So a bigger multiplier on a lower-value card can still lose to a smaller multiplier on Infinia.

Card groupBase %5X %10X %
Infinia / Diners Club Black / Diners Club Black Metal / Biz Black Metal3.33%16.67%33.33%
Regalia Gold / BizPower1.25%6.25%12.5%
Diners Club Privilege1.00%5.00%10.00%

Example: a ₹30,000 hotel booking on Infinia at 10X earns 10,000 RP, worth ₹10,000, an effective 33.33% return, well within the 15,000 RP monthly cap. The same ₹30,000 booking on Regalia Gold at 10X earns 7,500 RP (₹200 spend blocks), worth ₹3,750 at ₹0.50 per point, an effective 12.5% return, and would already blow past Regalia’s 4,000 RP monthly cap. Card tier changes the outcome by nearly 3x on an identical transaction.

Categories that earn cashback directly, like other HDFC credit cards (Millennia, Moneyback, Moneyback Plus, Freedom, Swiggy HDFC, and similar), debit cards, and PayZapp, skip this base-rate-times-multiplier math entirely. The percentages in the earning table in Section 2 (10%, 5%, 1%, and so on) are the final number, not something you multiply further.

10. Getting the most out of SmartBuy

A few practical habits make a real difference to what you actually earn:

  • Sequence your spends. Book your highest-value category (usually hotels or flights) early in the month before your cap fills up with smaller voucher purchases.
  • Match the card to the category. Infinia and Diners Black cardholders get the best redemption rates on flights and hotels, so route big travel spends there if you’re choosing between cards.
  • Check the savings calculator on SmartBuy. It’s built into the portal and shows the exact benefit before you complete a booking.
  • Track limited-time bumps. Categories like Duty Free periodically get short-term rate increases (10X instead of the usual 5X). These still count against your regular monthly cap, so time large purchases to catch the bump without blowing your cap elsewhere.

11. Frequently Asked Questions

What is HDFC SmartBuy?

HDFC SmartBuy is HDFC Bank’s shopping and travel platform that offers accelerated rewards or cashback on eligible purchases made through the platform.

How does SmartBuy 5X or 10X work?

The multiplier is applied to your card’s base reward rate. For example, if your card earns 5 RP per ₹150, a 5X offer earns 25 RP per ₹150, which is 5X the base reward rate.

Can I use SmartBuy for everyday spending?

Yes. SmartBuy also offers brand vouchers, allowing you to earn accelerated rewards on purchases from brands you already use for everyday spending.

Do SmartBuy rewards have a cap?

Yes. Cards have overall monthly caps, and brand vouchers have a sub-cap within the overall limit.

When are SmartBuy reward points credited?

Credit card reward points and cashback are generally credited within 90 working days from the last date of the transaction month, subject to the applicable conditions.

12. The bottom line

SmartBuy rewards the cardholders who plan ahead, not the ones who book on autopilot. The multiplier looks the same across every card marketing page, but once you factor in your card’s actual base rate, redemption value, and monthly cap, the real return can swing by 20 to 30 percentage points between cards. If you’re holding an HDFC card and haven’t checked your SmartBuy numbers in a while, especially if it’s a Regalia, BizPower, or Diners Club Privilege after the May 2026 change, it’s worth five minutes on the savings calculator before your next big booking. That’s usually where the “extra rewards you’re missing out on” actually are.
